How to Choose the Right Cabinet Handle for Your Kitchen

The type of handle you choose sets the tone for the whole room, and the right choice depends on your cabinet style, interior brief, and how you use the space. At Buildmat, we help renovators make this decision every day.

  • Cabinet knobs are timeless and work in almost any interior — particularly good on upper cabinet doors and smaller joinery.
  • Bar and pull handles give a linear, structured look that suits contemporary and minimalist kitchens.
  • Lip pulls create a clean, almost invisible profile for handleless joinery designs.
  • Cup pulls bring warmth and character — a natural fit for Hamptons, farmhouse, or heritage kitchens.
  • Appliance pulls are scaled for integrated dishwashers, fridges, and full-height pantry doors.
  • D handles are the reliable everyday choice — ergonomic, versatile, and available in almost every finish.
  • For a bold graphic detail, half-moon handles form a full circle when mounted side by side on double doors.

Matching Your Handle Finish to Your Interior Style

Matching your kitchen handles to the rest of your fixtures is the single most effective way to make a kitchen feel professionally designed. For contemporary and minimalist interiors, matte black cabinet handles paired with matte black tapware are a bold, cohesive choice.

For warm, Japandi, or Scandi interiors, brushed brass or dark brushed brass handles alongside brushed brass tapware create a rich, layered look. For Hamptons and coastal styles, brushed nickel or polished nickel with brushed nickel tapware is the classic combination.

For heritage, Art Deco, or character-home renovations, bronze or antique brass with warm-toned fixtures adds depth and history.

Why We Stock Momo Handles and Alma Handles

At Buildmat, we're selective about the brands we carry. Momo Handles and Alma handles are two we back without hesitation. As an Australian-owned and designed brand, Momo Handles has built a reputation as the benchmark for premium cabinet hardware in this country.

The solid brass construction of their premium ranges gives every handle a weight and substance that lower price points simply can't replicate. Their finish palette is cohesive across more than 30 ranges — meaning you can run a consistent hardware look from your front door through to your kitchen and bathroom without sourcing from multiple brands. Every Momo piece carries a 15-year warranty.

Sizing Guide: Getting the Proportions Right

Pull handles should be approximately one-third the length of the drawer or door face. For standard drawers up to 600mm wide, a 128mm–160mm pull is the right call.

For wider pan drawers or larger doors, 256mm–320mm handles provide better proportion and grip. For full-height pantry doors and integrated appliances, an appliance pull at 416mm or longer gives you the visual weight and leverage the door needs.

Hole centre distance (CC) is the key spec — common sizes are 96mm, 128mm, 160mm, 192mm, 256mm, and 320mm. If you're replacing existing handles, match the CC to avoid patching.

FAQS

Knobs use a single fixing point — compact, timeless, and great for upper cabinet doors. Pull handles use two fixing points and offer a longer grip, making them more practical on drawers and heavier doors. Most renovators use a mix: knobs on doors, pulls on drawers. Keep the finish consistent across both and it looks intentional.
Yes! Mixing knobs and pulls can add character to your kitchen. Try using knobs for upper cabinets and pull handles for drawers. Just make sure the finishes match for a cohesive feel.
Brushed finishes are your best bet. They hide fingerprints and smudges, making them perfect for high-use kitchens.
Measure the centre-to-centre distance between your existing screw holes. If you're installing into new cabinetry, your cabinetmaker will pre-drill to your specified CC. The most common sizes are 96mm, 128mm, 160mm, and 320mm.
Absolutely. The same ranges work across bathroom vanities, laundry cabinetry, and wardrobe doors. Running the same handle and finish across every room is one of the most effective ways to create a cohesive renovation.
